About Us

What We Do

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is a medical specialty focused on restoring and enhancing functional ability and quality of life for individuals with long term problems like chronic pains, physical impairments or disabilities. It addresses a wide range of conditions affecting the nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. PM&R specialists, or physiatrists, employ a variety of approaches that are compatible with specialty medical care, including therapeutic exercises, manual treatments, and functional training, to help patients regain lost function and improve their overall well-being.

Multidisciplinary Approach

Your PM&R specialist often involves other specialists when needed, including doctors of other specialties, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, social workers, massage therapists and other healthcare professionals working collaboratively to address a patient’s individual needs.

Key Aspect of PM&R

The focus of PM&R is on FUNCTION, i.e., aiming to improve or restore functional ability in areas like movement and activities of daily living. In other words we aim to improve quality of life by reducing pain, increasing strength, increasing flexibility and mobility in general.

Our Philosophy

Our Philosophy

Our Philosophy

At PM&R by Joe, we believe that good health is more than just the absence of disease. Our approach to healthcare focuses on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our patients.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

PM&R addresses a wide array of conditions, including

  • Musculoskeletal: back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, workplace injuries, arthritis.
  • Neurological: pinched nerves in the neck or back, carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves in the elbows, knees, ankles.
  • Other: joint injuries (shoulders, knees, elbows, ankles, hips, fingers, etc.), joints that had surgeries but still need improvement in their function.

The Osteopathic Philosophy

  1. For every medical diagnosis of a disease or an injury there is another medical diagnosis hidden in the form of a twist or a turn in the body’s framework that is either contributing to the original diagnosis or causing it altogether.
  2. This twist or turn, called a somatic dysfunction (SD), can only be diagnosed with the physician’s hands and can only be treated with the physician’s hands.

Treatment Approaches

Prior to any treatment, a medical diagnosis is needed. First the physician will look for the possible group of diagnosis that may be causing the present condition. Sometimes there are diagnoses that are in conjunction with the original diagnoses that when discovered and treated may bring significant relief. These treatments can include:

  • Osteopathic Manual Treatments (OMT).
  • Functional Training: Ergonomic modifications and postural training that can improve the impaired ability to perform most activities in the normal life of a person in our society.
  • Trigger point injections, prolotherapy, and other joint injections aimed at reducing pain and helping the rehabilitation of the patients.

Summary

PM&R is a medical specialty that focuses on restoring and enhancing the functional abilities of individuals with physical impairments or disabilities through a variety of treatment approaches with the goal of improving their quality of life.
